Curriculum Committee Meeting Minutes
October 26, 2015
2:00 p.m.
Cleveland Hall, Room 142
Members Present:     Marilyn Angoli, Melissa Dover, Suzanne Ellenberger, Tonia Faulling, Scott Harvey, Christy Lawless, Amoena Norcross, Donna Palmer, Jason Poole, Amy Roberts, Sarah Shumpert, and John Woodson
Members Absent:  Lacey Torge

1.      Review revised committee charter

Due to reworking and reevaluating of the Curriculum Committee process, there have not been any meetings.  Sarah Shumpert and Amoena Norcross are now working under the newly formed Curriculum and Instructional Support Department.  This department will help faculty and provide administrative support to the curriculum process.  The purpose of the Curriculum Committee is to be a peer review group.
John noted the library would like to be involved so they can plan to have the appropriate resources for courses offered.  Also, Gayle Arries would like to attend the meetings so her department will be informed of changes in order to promote new courses/programs to the public.  Scott noted that Marilyn will take over Christy’s role in the curriculum process.

2.      Elect Chairperson-Elect

Suzanne Ellenberger volunteered to be the next Chairperson.  The Committee unanimously voted to elect her.  Her term will begin in Fall 2016.

3.       Deleted Courses

There are numerous courses that have been deleted prior to the meeting.  These changes appear in the latest catalog.  Each division representative should relay the changes to their respective divisions.  Please refer to the deleted courses handout that Sarah e-mailed.

4.       Added Courses

IDS 210 (Special Topics for Honors) is an elective course for honors students in the honors program.  In this course, there will be a different special topic covered each semester.  “Sociology in Sports” was chosen to be the first topic.  The Committee voted not to add the course due to multiple reasons:  Spring 2016 registration is already underway; less than 30 students are enrolled in the honors program, “Society in Sports” will be a new course added in the near future, etc.
COL 120 (College and Career Readiness) is a course that Galen DeHay has administratively approved.  It is being presented as information only.  A request has been made to add it to the CAC.  This course will target the population that has completed a high school diploma, but have yet to pursue a post-secondary education.

5.       Pre-Dental Hygiene Certificate

The Pre-Dental Hygiene changes have already been made and are in the latest catalog. These changes were made due to an articulation agreement with Greenville Technical College.  Please refer to the handout e-mailed by Sarah.

6.       CRJ English requirement change

The Criminal Justice program would like to replace ENG 155 and ENG 156 with ENG 101 and SPC 205.  They feel this makes the degree more transfer friendly for the students who wish to transfer to a school that has an articulation agreement with TCTC.  Also, this would raise the standards to meet competitor colleges and other technical colleges.  John will contact Joan Kalley about the need for more ENG 101 and SPC 205 courses.  This change is currently on hold until the next meeting.

7.       Deletion of Accounting Certificates

The Accounting program would like to delete the Financial Accounting Certificate, Managerial Accounting Certificate, and the Tax Accounting Certificate. They would like to replace these certificates with a General Accounting Certificate.  These changes do not affect other departments.  The General Accounting Certificate has not gone through the process yet.  John will follow up with the program.  Scott needs to know a date to stop admitting students and when the last date to graduate students.  The dates cannot be within the same semester.

John would like for everyone to look at the changes that the Management program is requesting.  This has not been approved through the state yet.  This will be voted on at a later date.

8.       Media Arts Production

The Radio and Television Broadcasting program is now Media Arts Production.  John worked with the RTV program at Trident Technical College, the only other college with the program in the state, to agree upon a new name.  The state has approved the change and it is currently being added into the CAC.

9.       Next Meeting

The next meeting will be in November.  Donna will follow up with the other Health Education programs that had changes approved, but were not addressed at the meeting.

The meeting adjourned at 3:00 p.m.
