Opening Remarks
Andrea
Barnett, mathematics instructor and CIA for Comprehensive Studies, stated that
she appreciated everyone taking time from their busy schedule to attend the
meeting.
2012 ACT Course Placement Study

Bryson reported the following:
Ø Study based on
first-time postsecondary students for three fall semesters (2009, 2010, and
2011)
Ø Accuracy rates were low
and had a small range across all scores (more control over input data if done
in-house)
Ø No change in success
rates – gone down
Ø Percent of students placed
in lower-level courses is very high.
Ø Current cut-off scores
vary when comparing to recommended cut-off scores.
Ø COMPASS is necessary
for placement but is it accurate?
Ø What would be
considered a good success rate in reading?
The current score is 37.
Ø Does the College want
to raise the reading level score? Will certain students be denied admission to
the College? Is there a minimum level
reading score to indicate that students would not be successful?
Ø Memorandum of Agreement
– 8th grade level and COMPASS score of 36
Ø Matriculation – one
piece of this is assessment (access, advise and place)
Ø COMPASS – acceptance
used the last 3 years for Math, English and Reading scores.
Ø Bridge - admitted to
the College based on SAT/ACT scores.
Ø Banner information
stays in the system indefinitely unless manually removed. After three years, the information may be
removed, manually.
Ø Problem – don’t enforce
our policies.
Ø Spring 2013 – last
semester offering Jumpstart – calendar conflicts.
Ø Minor adjustments to
the Placement Scores-COMPASS 2013-2014 sheet.
