2012 ACT Course Placement Study

K.C. Bryson reported the following:

Ø  Study based on first-time postsecondary students for three fall semesters (2009, 2010, and 2011)

Ø  Accuracy rates were low and had a small range across all scores (more control over input data if done in-house)

Ø  No change in success rates – gone down

Ø  Percent of students placed in lower-level courses is very high.

Ø  Current cut-off scores vary when comparing to recommended cut-off scores.

 The following was discussed:

Ø  COMPASS is necessary for placement but is it accurate?

Ø  What would be considered a good success rate in reading?  The current score is 37.

Ø  Does the College want to raise the reading level score? Will certain students be denied admission to the College?  Is there a minimum level reading score to indicate that students would not be successful?

Ø  Memorandum of Agreement – 8th grade level and COMPASS score of 36

Ø  Matriculation – one piece of this is assessment (access, advise and place)

Ø  COMPASS – acceptance used the last 3 years for Math, English and Reading scores.

Ø  Bridge - admitted to the College based on SAT/ACT scores.

Ø  Banner information stays in the system indefinitely unless manually removed.  After three years, the information may be removed, manually.

Ø  Problem – don’t enforce our policies.

Ø  Spring 2013 – last semester offering Jumpstart – calendar conflicts.

Ø  Minor adjustments to the Placement Scores-COMPASS 2013-2014 sheet.

With no other business to discuss, the meeting was adjourned.

Placement Committee Meeting 9-22-12

Minutes from the Placement Committee

September 22, 2012

1.       The override ENG 101/ENG 032 combination is being deactivated because too many students drop the RDG after getting the ENG 101 override.

2.       The override ENG 100/RDG 032 combination is being deactivated for the same reason.

3.       Students who score a 36 or lower on the RDG test have a statistically lower course success rate (43%) than students who score between 37 and 62 (55%).

4.       The difference in course success rates between students scoring 37-62 and students who score 63+ is also statistically significant.

5.       The probability of success in a course increases as the RDG score increases.

6.       94% of TCTC students score a 63 or higher on the RDG test, approximately 6% score 37-62, and less than 1% score a 36 or lower.

7.       A preliminary analysis of data indicates that there is not a statistically significant difference in retention between students who scored 62 and up on the RDG test and those who scored less than 62 on the RDG test. KC is going to look at this data in more detail.

8.       The COMPASS score of 62 is equal to a 7th grade reading level (TABE). The COMPASS score of 36 is equal to a 4th grade reading level (TABE).

This meeting has been “called” due to information brought to Jennifer Beattie’s attention regarding SAT/ACT Scores in Comparison to COMPASS scores.

SAT/ACT Scores in Comparison to COMPASS Scores for Students Entering TCTC

Ø  Using SAT/ACT criteria for the cut scores per Scott Harvey

Ø  COMPASS 102 at Trident Technical College are less than here – placement is higher at Tri-County Technical College

Ø  COMPASS used as an admission requirement

Ø  Admission requirement SAT/ACT can be used as initial placement -- otherwise where and what?  Problem to solve?

Ø  Clemson Math Placement Test (CMPT) was higher than needed to be – only 45% success rate. Tri-County Technical College has a higher success rate based on our Math Placement Test

Ø  COMPASS – 102 prime  - what entry-level would you place requirement for admission

Ø  Ability to Benefit is impacted by admissions.   Exposure to Comprehensive Studies will logically show Ability to Benefit.

Ø  5-year timeframe – SAT/ACT for admissions requirement (480/SAT, 19/ACT)

Ø  Trident Technical College requirements for admissions are: application, fee, and placement assessment.

Ø  COMPASS accurate placement tool

Ø  Acceptance for placement on SAT/ACT admissions – 37/RDG

Ø  Test information on public network – samples – videos on eTC (videos can be moved to public side)

Ø  SAT/ACT/COMPASS have to take anyway

Ø  Bridge – can we admit them to the College based on SAT/ACT

Ø  Grab SAT/ACT/COMPASS – correlation.  Does ACT know COMPASS correlation? Yes    W/69 = 18 ACT; R/83 = 21 ACT; M/65 = 22 ACT

Ø  What is MOA? MOU? What’s comparable to R/62 as state increases? College Readiness – CR1

Ø  Whether using minimal ACT/SAT scores as admissions? Will the “or” be 200 minimum?

Ø   Horry – SAT/300 Critical Reading for admitting.  MOA? Admission to college with SAT

Ø  Jennifer Beattie will call Adult Education.

Ø  Andrea Barnett will call Frank Potter at ACT.

COMPASS Placement Chart No score of 100 on COMPASS test, need to revise chart
Reverse RDG and ENG on chart for easier understanding

Ability to Benefit- 62 needed for Financial Aid.
Students without paper work- How many scored under 36?

Concerns that 031 and 032 classes are not as rigorous as other schools
Advising:
It was brought to the committee’s attention that students may not understand directions for the reading/writing section of COMPASS resulting in low scores. Suggestions made are as follows:

1.       Advising 1st –then set up everything then test

2.       Pre-test workshop for COMPASS:  need interactive video to help students
Camtasia-how to “take the Compass”

3.       Look at testing module: what exactly is told to students

4.       Testing and Orientation switch to Orientation, Testing, and Advising

The idea is for students to go through orientation or meet with an advisor prior to taking the COMPASS then they would understand the importance of doing their best.

Correct Placement:
Reading cut off scores have not yet been determined by state

Diagnostics as part of COMPASS:    1 unit –1/2 unit pre and post cost $ 1.20 per unit:  Find the number of students who place into developmental courses- pilot those classes with diagnostic
Data on Diagnostic test: Frank Potter doing state studies
