Curriculum Committee Meeting Minutes

October 29, 2020 ~ 10:00 a.m.

1.   Approve November 11, 2019 and September 24, 2020 Minutes

a.     The Committee approved the November 11, 2019 minutes.

b.     The Committee approved the September 24, 2020 minutes.

 

1.     Curriculum Proposals

a.     Computer & Information Technology

                           i.     All items recommended for approval as described below.

                          ii.     New Course (CPT 238): Robin Long on behalf of Billy Carson and Suzanne Konieczny proposed adding CPT 238 Internet Scripting (in CAC) stating it was determined there was much overlap in the PHP and Python courses and both can effectively be covered in CPT 238.

                        iii.     New Certificates: They are proposing adding two certificates Cisco Network Administrator and Computer Technician. The certificate curriculum is designed to provide the necessary training for students to acquire the Industry Standard CompTIA A+ Certification as well the Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) Certification. Courses in this certificate stack into the Associate Degree program.

                        iv.     Configuration Changes:

1.     Cybersecurity and Forensic degree emphasis

a.     Replace IST 266 (Internet and Firewall Security) with IST 241 (Network Architecture I)

2.     Software and Web Development degree emphasis

a.     Replace CPT 283 (PHP Programming I) with CPT 238 (Internet Scripting)

                          v.     Prerequisite Changes:

b.     Proposed: CPT 167

2.     IST 204 Cisco Troubleshooting

a.     Current: IST 203

b.   Media Arts Production

                        vi.     All items recommended for approval as described below.

                       vii.     Expire MAP 272 SCWE in Media Arts Production II: Amy Roberts on behalf of John Woodson proposed to expire MAP 272 SCWE; this course was created as an opportunity for a student to complete a second internship. This opportunity has happened once in the past six (6) years.

                     viii.     New Courses (ARV prefix): They are proposing to add ARV (already in CAC) prefix courses stating they are more transferrable to other public institutions.

1.     ARV 211 Digital Media Design

2.     ARV 213 Lighting

3.     ARV 161 Visual Communication Media

4.     ARV 222 Computer Animation

                        ix.     Configuration Changes: Degree and all certificates (except Audio) as appropriate

·       Replace MAP 112 with ARV 211

·       Replace MAP 130 with ARV 213

·       Replace MAP 161 with ARV 161

·       Replace MAP 212 with ARV 222

c.      General Engineering Technology

                           i.     All items recommended for approval as described below.

                          ii.     Expire CHT 110 Introduction to Alternate Energy Technology: Dorian McIntire proposed to expire CHT 110 noting courses have not been offered in the past five (5) years.

                        iii.     Expire EGR 110 Introduction to Computer Environment: They are proposing to expire EGR 110; this has been phased out due to decreased enrollment and need.

                        iv.     Expire EGR 201 Public Infrastructure: They are proposing to expire EGR 201; this has been phased out due to decreased enrollment and need.

                          v.     Configuration Changes: They are proposing replacing EET 175 Introduction to Photonics with EET 274 Selected Topics in Electrical/Electronics Engineering Tech noting this will update degree coursework and will be more in line with current industry.

d.     A&S - Humanities

                           i.     All items recommended for approval as described below.

                          ii.     Expire PHI 201 History of Philosophy: Robin Long on behalf of Della Vanhuss proposed expiring PHI 201 noting this has not bee offered in the past five (5) years.

e.     A&S - Science

                           i.     All items recommended for approval as described below.

                          ii.     Expire CHM 107 Contemporary Chemistry II: Robin Long on behalf of Shelby Duffy proposed to expire CHM 107 noting there are not enough students in transfer majors that require this course.

                        iii.     Expire CRJ 261 Forensic Chemistry I: They are proposing to expire CRJ 261 there is not enough student interest; in addition, there currently isn’t anyone qualified to teach course.

f.       Criminal Justice

                           i.     All items recommended for approval as described below.

                          ii.     Expire CRJ 201 Fingerprint Science: Robin Long on behalf of Eddie McCall proposed to expire CRJ 201 Fingerprint Science stating this has not been offered in the past five (5).

                        iii.     Expire CRJ 235 Practical Crime Scene Investigation: They are proposing to expire CRJ 235 stating this has not been offered in the past five (5).

                        iv.     Expire CRJ 265 Loss Prevention Operations: They are proposing to expire CRJ 265 stating this has not been offered in the past five (5).

g.     Surgical Technology

                           i.     All items recommended for approval as described below.

                          ii.      Configuration Changes: Donna Palmer on behalf of Denelle White proposed to replace MAT 120 Probability and Statistics with MAT 155 Contemporary Mathematics. In order for students to take MAT 120 they are having to take multiple extra semester to meet prerequisite requirements. MAT 155 provides adequate skills for the ST Degree.

                        iii.     Prerequisite Changes:

1.     SUR 103 Surgical Procedures I

a.     Current: SUR 101 and SUR 102

b.     Proposed: SUR 101, SUR 102, and BIO 225

2.     SUR 104 Surgical Procedures II

a.     Current: SUR 101, SUR 102, and SUR 103

b.     Proposed: SUR 101, SUR 102, SUR 103, and BIO 225

3.     SUR 105 Surgical Procedures III

a.     Current: SUR 103 and SUR 104

b.     Proposed: SUR 103, SUR 104, and BIO 210

4.     SUR 110 Introduction to Surgical Practicum

a.   Current: SUR 103 and SUR 104

b.   Proposed: SUR 103, SUR 104, and BIO 210

5.   SUR 130 Biomedical Science for The Surgical Technologist

a.   Current: SUR 103 and SUR 104

b.   Proposed: SUR 103, SUR 104, and BIO 210

h.     Administrative Office Technology

                           i.     All items recommended for approval as described below.

                          ii.     Configuration Changes: Brian Smith proposed configuration changes stating MGT 110 will no longer be offered.

1.     AOT Degree

a.     Replace MGT 110 Office Management with MGT 101 Principles of Management

2.     AOT Degree – Medical Emphasis

a.     Replace MGT 110 Office Management with MGT 101 Principles of Management

i.       Early Care and Education

                           i.     All items recommended for approval as described below.

                          ii.     New Certification: Robin Long on behalf of Meredith Dickens proposed to add two (2) new certificates; Special Needs and Early Care and Education Assistant Certificate. These certificates are in response to the ECE Advisory Committee requests, in addition to a high demand for paraprofessionals with early education course preparation.

                        iii.     Configuration Changes: The proposed configuration changes were designed to avoid all NAEYC Key Assessments and lab courses because those courses limit scheduling options and this will create a more attainable certificate.

1.     Early Childhood Development Certificate

a.     Remove: ECD 135, ECD 132, and ECD 133

b.     Decreases total credit hours from 27 to 18

2.     Child Care Management Certificate

a.     Remove: ECD 102, ECD 201, ECD 203, and ECD 237

b.     Adjust configuration with remaining courses

c.      Decreases total credit hours from 30 to 18

 

3.  Open discussion and Adjournment: The next Curriculum Committee meeting TBD for November. Tonia Faulling will send meeting invite for virtual meeting at a later date. Meeting was adjourned.
